What does it mean that my family member is in the URPA?

PACU stands for Post-Anesthesia Recovery Unit, also colloquially called "the awakening."

Patients admitted to URPA beds are those patients who, due to the characteristics of their surgery , only need to be in the Unit for a few hours until they recover from the anesthesia , so that after those hours they return to the conventional hospital ward with their relatives.

This is why relatives, after being informed by the surgeons and anesthesiologist in the operating room, do not go to the Unit and wait for their relative on the ward.

What does it mean for my family member to have MICROBIOLOGICAL ISOLATION and what do I have to do?

Your family member may be prescribed ISOLATION measures. Indicated by a warning sign next to their bed.

Microbiological isolation can be used to protect your family member in case of REVERSE ISOLATION for patients who have a low immune system.

Or it can also be CONVENTIONAL MICROBIOLOGICAL ISOLATION to protect other patients in case their family member is diagnosed with an infection caused by a germ that is difficult to treat and against which only a few antibiotics are active.

The aim of this isolation is to prevent the spread of germs that are more resistant to antibiotics.

What you should do when you go to visit him is:

-Wash your hands before entering with hydroalcoholic solution.

-Put on a disposable gown that is usually at the foot of the bed and/or will be provided by the staff.

-Put on a mask if necessary.

-When you leave you will take off your robe and throw it in the trash container.

-And remember not to take the germ home, wash your hands again with hydroalcoholic solution when you leave.

-And don't worry, if you have any questions, ask the staff and we will tell you how to do things.

How do I find out if my relative is DISCHARGED FROM THE CRITICAL CARE UNIT and moved to the hospital ward?

Don't worry, we will call you at the phone number you provided when the patient was admitted to let you know that your family member is going to the ward and what room number they are going to.
